Phil, specifically will the extra I0 & I1 bits give a much improved display?

I believe it will. The 16 gray levels alone is a big improvement over four grays. Add to that the subtle midtones, and I think it's worth pursuing.

Is someone going to whip together a proof of concept and actually test this, or are we still bench racing?

I am just deciding whether to put it onto my next design. It seems to be worth the trouble, so provided it fits it will be on the board. I will provide solder links to select between old and new (not meant for interactive changing).

Yesterday I got a quickstart board. It seems to be easy to add a vga connector to its connector and see what it can do.
I am interested in this rr-gg-bb-ii and ggggggss-rrrrbbbb. so I will experiment with this. Free time needed... I haven't a lot of it.

I used a different circuit that has jumpers to switch between 6 bit and 8 bit and got it working here's the link

here is another interesting way to do RRGGBBII, 64 colors with 4 shades = 256 colors
