Isn't this 1970's technology? For $1000, it should make the fish jump directly into your cooler.

I could buy a lot of fish for that $1000. No boat required.

After looking around the web a bit, I think $1000 is a pretty good price for that sonar.

I don't fish much myself but I sure think a sonar system would be cool to have.

It's a dual beam sonar plus a GPS chartplotter. They didn't have those in the 70s. Personally, I prefer Garmin.

Just put one of these on my boat:
    http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Marine/HDS-Gen2/HDS-7-Gen2/

With the StructureScan side scan unit it doubled the value of the boat. Told the wife it will lead to more fish dinners.

I have a rule - "it's not worth cleaning just one fish". And since I only catch one at a time.....

I don't fish to catch anything, more just to get away and enjoy the morning, watch the eagles catch them, cuss at the skiers and jetskiers, avoid the honey-do-list and relax. For evening fishing, add in beer.

My father has a sonar from the 70s (or possibly 80s) at home.
you know the difference because of the bulky case and the roll of paper fitted at one side of where you'd expect the screen to be...
(old, commercial model used in small fishingvessels. )
Don't know if he still has the sounder, though.

Humminbird makes good equipment, and that specific unit is priced at a steal!

I'd like a towed passive array with a signature file for the DSP so you could find that old grand daddy bass hiding in the weeds that you've been stalking for years....then you hit them with a ping (Give me a ping, Vasily. One ping only, please)....and up they come, cooked and ready to eat!

Probably overkill for just fishing but having a really nice sonar unit that shows the depth and what kind of otherwise un-seen obstructions may be hidden can well be worth it. Back when I owned a boat I ended up replacing two props (actual propellers) and one out drive. There was one obstruction that took off an entire blade of the three bladed propeller. Definitely threw off the balance and limped home on that one.

The sonar I supported in the Navy back in the late '70's (AN/SQS-26BX) could probably do that. We could put 160,000 Watts into the water at a center frequency of 3.55 kHz.
