Just received the new HP Pavilion dv6. It looks better than it does in it's pictures. Almost a shame to give it to a Robot but.....that's what it was bought for. Going through it and trashing all the HP stuff and anything else that might get in the way. I just want to plug it all in and play but I know that the ground work has to come first.

1 question to start out with. While I am working on the Eddie can I have the AC power pluged in? Will it hurt anything ?

To get rid off junk on a new machine, I use PC Decrapifier. Looks like they have a version for Windows 7 now.

    Deleting Windows??
Kidding! It amazes me what all they can cram onto a PC - actually, our work images are the worst....and we can't get rid of any of it!
This should be exciting, you have some very interesting plans for putting this all to good use!

You're probably better off running the Laptop on AC power during the configuration and development since it won't eat up battery power. If you eventually want to power everything from the Main Eddie battery then you could look for one of the laptop DC/DC adapters meant for charging and running the laptop on the road. I'm using one of those on my large robots and it works well.

I must have stated that wrong. During developement and test the laptop will be on AC. The laptop will run on its own battery as I purchased two of the larger, long life batteries. I have no plans to draw down the Eddie batteries any more than I have to. Even the blood, glucose, ox, and temp devices will have their own power source. My question was intended to find out if I can do the testing, and development, with the Eddies AC power source pluged in. I have seen nothing that says I can't but the powersource, for the Eddir, has a charge indicator on it. Does this mean the AC will shut it self off or does it continue to charge the Eddie batteries. Would I be drawing to much if I had just board power on with motors shut off. I do not want to destroy the charger nor the batteries. HP didn't send a Win 7 Pro disk with the notebook so I am having to explore and dump stuff using Revo. It's junk to me but it is probably some cool stuff to somebody else. lol On top of everything else I am still doing Win 7 updates to boot. lol But the Microsoft software says that all current updates must be in place or you may have problems. Now my fingers are tired........oh well....this is fun......so far

It is customary now to have the recover software on a hidden partition on the hard drive, maybe Drive D. No CD needed. Access is through the boot menu at start up with a function key.

HP doesn't seem to ship the recovery media any longer but you can call them and request a copy. If you just bought the system they will usually send you a set for free. Otherwise it usually runs about $10.60 for a recovery set of media. I purchased a set for each of the HP systems that I own and would recommend getting a set right from HP as soon as you can.

I got the two hooked up. I messed up the Voice during install. I followed the instructions (and probably not close enough) and deleted all of the Text to Speech and vice versa. I am getting indications that the Kinect is working correctly. The sound tracks (on the test software) left to right and center. The image looks fine and the Kinect moves up and down so that's one less headache. Gonna leave it alone for the rest of the evening before I break somthing. Start back again tomorrow. I'll read the instructions and see what I did wrong. As far as the system goes they partitioned the HD in 3 sections. 1 800 Gig and two 100 gig. They split the software between the two 100 gig partitions. Just have to look at it with clear eyes tomorrow. Has anyone figured out about pluging in the Eddie charger while I work with it or should I just run it from the batteries?

Sure, you could charge it and run the robot at the same time - just put it on top of a couple of books. Those sealed lead acid batteries are very flexible in this way. If there's ever a problem I'd gladly provide replacement parts for no charge. Go for it, have fun! Ken Gracey

T-hanks Ken. I guess I will be working on this most of my waking days. I just don't want to destroy it. There are a few people, here in Michigan, that are waiting to see it work. Including me. lol

Now if I can find out if I wired the encoders correctly all would be great!
