Surface to Air missiles (SAMS) on apartment rooftops in London. I will not fire them, Sam-I-Am!

What's next, passing ruffians saying "Ni" at will to old ladies?

Why not copy what they did for the Beijing Olympics and merely smother everything in an opaque unbreathable blanket of smog? You can't hit a target if you can't see it, right?

Considering the constant threat of al-Qaeda, along with other militant groups, and what happened to the World Trade Center, I think it is a very wise decision, especially since Britian is a key ally to the United States.

    Just my opinion.

My apartment already looks like that. For example, I've got two of these beauties in my closet:

It would save a lot of expense and hassle if they would just host the olympics in Afganistan or Pakistan or wherever.
Nobody wants that stuff on their doorstep destroying their neighborhood.

Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who. This is supposed to be an happy occasion.

Yes, it is supposed to be a happy occation.
However somewhere along the line something has gone horribly wrong.
Twelve billion pounds and the destruction of a large area of a
city is a lot to pay to find out who can run fastest or jump furthest.

And as the women's beach volley ball is the only true sport at the olympics the authorities should do all they can to protect the babes, I mean athletes.

I heard a BBC correspondent claim that this was the first time that missiles had been located in London since WW2. During and prior to WW2 they were common place?????

Err...well...There were missiles in London during the second world war. But they were not defending. After all the Germans had only just invented them.

I guess there were anti-aircraft guns around though.

No disagreement here. I was just going along with erco's Monty Python theme.

In fact, the whole reason the quote was originally funny was because of its glaring incongruity. Swordsmen had just hacked their way through a wedding party.

Considering the economic downturn, the need for 'homeland security', and the concern with free shipping lanes in the South China Sea -- I am getting a bit of 1930s deja vu. In the first free presidential elections in Taiwan, Mainland China dropped several missiles (without war heads) about 20km (no very far) off the coast of Kaohsiung (my home town). Taiwan was then using Nike missiles that they had hung on to since the 1960s.

So are these British missiles prepared to shoot down commercial airliners or R/C controlled drones? Seems a bit wierd to me as I am not quite sure that they have any real targets.

Perhaps a defensive perimeter of shrubbery would keep the ruffians away.

Umbrellas, the British always defend with umbrellas. And nasty little signs.

Got me there! Of course, the missiles were all incoming.

And what kind of mess would an airliner make on the ground if it was shot down over London?

Perhaps they'll have trained swallows dropping coconuts on the bad guys.
