Mapping the room

Hi,

I have been working on a robot (propeller) with ping(with servo) detectors.

Is it possible to measure the distance from objects and by doing so constructing a map of the robot's environment?
Maybe it is too far fetched, but I will ask the question anyway :-)

If so how can this be achieved?

I have already written a java app on my laptop that communicates with the propeller chip via the easy bluetooth device.
I guess It is maybe an option to put some of the processing in the java application......


Any advice or suggestions are much appreciated
