any ideas on how to reuse items from household trash to car parts, and anything else that would otherwise just be junk.

Here's my entry. I built the entire robot from stuff I had on hand. I did not have time to make wood wheels so I used some from my sons BOE-Bot. The wooden frame is cut on my scrap built CNC router from scrap 6mm plywood. The servos are from an old RC plane, two I modified for continuous rotation, the third for the ping is unmodified. The battery holder from an old XT PC battery backup. The control board I designed and etched myself and populated with parts salvaged from old PC motherboards. The Prop is borrowed from another project. This Bot is a little to heavy so I need to redesign the plywood parts for weight reduction but it runs just fine.

very nice I like the use of sustainable resources too.
good kit potential and I think a Enviro friendly bot made with ecologically sound parts is a good idea

outside the box is the best option here.
also tried and true designs with an ECO friendly options like biodegradable components.
this is all in the spirit of earth friendly options to projects and creations.

also Im just popping the thread up so everyone can see and have a chance.

I'm posting my robot project for consideration. I'm not sure that it qualifies because it's not a recent project, in fact I've been working on for a couple of years. I've actually posted it in the robotics forum.

I work at a recycling center in Sapulpa, OK, so I have a constant exposure to DIY fodder. The recycling center I work at is a workshop for those with developmental disabilities where I am a job coach. The individuals I work with all know my hobby and happily support my efforts by spotting and setting aside any potential items.

The robot uses a propeller proto board, a homemade interface and motor controller board. It also sports DIY sonars used for obstacle avoidance and triangulation, A compass module for navigation, and a RF transmitter for communication with sonar beacons. I've included a photo of the charging station / sonar beacon that I've built. The recycled components have been found in the trash or are from the recycling center. Those are motors from a riding toy, an SLA battery from an UPS, scrap plywood, scrap PVC, wire from scrap ethernet cable, scrap aluminum channel, relays from a couple of salvaged UPSs, LEDs from salvaged christmas lights.

Those look like Power Wheels gearmotors to me...

awesome, I want to let everyone know, you can post any project you developed so long as it promotes reuse and or Eco friendly concepts, this is to celebrate earth day.
I see at least 2 projects here that can be a kit that people would get to make at home.
Also to answer a question someone else posed to me, I am not saying it will be sold, but it is a simple truth kits can encourage many to use a new way of making robots or projects. since kits provide a quick easy example as to how to use the new way of doing something.
the ideas I have seen so far are great, reuse, biodegradable components, reimplementing old items like cell phones to a new purpose.

Can I enter? My current fun project involves making a 'stargate' for our laundry doorway. When you fling clothes through the 'stargate', a ping sensor detects the clothing and the 'stargate' (rgb led strip around doorway) goes suddenly crazy and then settles.

Anyway the thing it re-uses, is one of those 40 pin, 3 header, Parallel IDE (or P-ATA) cables that used to be so common. Sometimes they had 80 wires but still 40 pin headers in between. In honor of your contest, Codeviper, I will attempt to extract some 40 pin headers from motherboards or drive controllers or cd-roms using a heat gun, rather than using new ones like in this photo.

    Dear Tubular,

Please adjust your "Stargate" your dirty clothes seem to end up in our laundry basket and every so often, one of my socks goes through to some other universe. The missing socks I can live with but your dirty clothes are really starting to pile up!

    Thanks!

Lol, sorry about that. I'll make some adjustments. I think the code is getting corrupted somehow during the "spin cycle".

it is the 29th and one hour left, I hope if you have an idea you submit it soon.
I want to thank parallax for providing us such fine products to use for hobby to professional electronics and for being kind enough to put up the prizes.
I want to thank the entrants, :thumb: you all are great for thinking outside of the normal concept of, need it, buy it.
It is good to buy new products, but how do we define new?
sometimes new can be made from old and be just as good as a freshly forged whatever.
This little experiment seems meager in comparison to the big picture.
Yet, so does an acorn compared to an oak.
Hopefully, some new experimenters will see this and be inspired to not just buy new plastic cases and other things every time they need to do some new project.
Rather they will look around and go, how can I use something around me now?

just my 2 cents on it.
I hope if parallax will support this next year, more of you will be ready for it. but great ideas :thumb:
I will look over all entrants and by 8pm EST post the winners.
I will also PM the winners and see what prize they claim from their placing.

Codeviper thanks for organizing, and thanks to Parallax for their support, and congratulations to the winners.

Hopefully you can run it again next year, with a bit more notice (I think 6 weeks is ideal). In the mean time we can all be on the lookout for good salvage candidates.

now that finals are over I will have more chances to do my own projects finally.
I hope we do get to do this again, more people will be ready for it and generate better ideas.
