signal watching in a bi-directional line. how to?

ok here is what i was thinking 4 diodes each paired up so 2 has voltage flow one way the other pair in the other direction.
so by taping between the diodes in the pair i can watch the IO in either direction seperately.
do you think that will work for detecting the data direction
the reason why i want to do this is i found a "royal" "daVinchi" PDA with a keyboard that has an easy to find power and Vss but one line for signal. so I want to watch for out-going and incoming data as just tapping the line will only show signal and not tell me which way it is going.
this little keyboard folds up and is tiny plus these PDAs are cheap and common as bread. Im hoping to uses it as is without hacking it up it uses a mini headphone jack. my ideal is tiny box prop chip or Atmega nokia LCD battery and a little keyboard. my goal is i tiny computer in my pocket.
