I saw a CD mounted on a wheel and an optical mouse serving as the input sensor for sensing RPM rate and direction. That is doable with the Propeller or something like the BeagleBoard.
But at the end of the day, I am always wondering if I will every find a mechanical engineer to partner projects with. It seems every robot has some machinery required.
