Apparently, Phil is explanation-challenged. :) So here's an example, going from COG to HUB:
    COG
    HOG
    HUG
    HUB

(I was gonna use STAMP to PROPS for the example but couldn't find a route.)

    POLL
    MOLL
    MALL
    MALT
    MATT

Best I could come up with for POLL->MATT
(assuming moll is in Scrabble dictionary, don't have mine handy)

    The other appears harder.

    Rick,

Yup, MOLL is in there. You beat me by one and hit the theoretical minimum! I had:
    POLL
    POLE
    PALE
    MALE
    MALT
    MATT

Wow! I don't think I've ever hit a theoretical minimum before....makes me want to wake up the wife and kid and share the moment!

Can PHIL become RICK in just 4 moves? A prickly problem, to be sure.

Here's a product name logo "apide" I played with for a while. Decided not to use it.

(How'd I miss that?) No. At least not according to the OED. It would require RHIL, PIIL, PHCL, or PHIK to be words, none of which are.

    However,
    TEST
    PEST
    PELT
    MELT
    MOLT
    MOLL
    POLL

    Nice sequence, PhiPi !

Now try this: start with the word SPARKLING . Without rearranging any letters, remove one letter at a time, leaving a legit word. Subsequently reduce it down to a one letter (clearly either A or I). No Googling!

BTW I won a radio contest with this in the early 1980's and got Doobie Brothers tickets!

Who will post the correct solution first? Will Matt G supply a prize? Did he fix his car yet?

    Or worded differently:

Begin with the word "SPARKLING" and take away one letter so as to leave a new word. Then take away another letter from the new word and leave a different word. Continue this, letter by letter, getting a new word every time until you finally leave one word containing only one letter. You must not disturb the order of the remaining letters after a removal.

    NO GOOGLING !

    HONOR SYSTEM !

Q: Why is there only one jelly bean in that jar?
    A: WINNER!

PhiPi, you da man as always! Nicely and quickly played, Good Sir! Although I won with SPARKING..., per http://www.braingle.com/brainteasers/teaser.php?op=2&id=39358&comm=0

Matt_G, tell him what he's won! A new car? Your old car?

Does it have to be Matt? Can't Vanna White make the announcement and just deliver the car personally?

Truth be known, I enjoy these word games more than programming. :) I can't wait to see what Will Shortz has in store for me every Saturday morning in the NY Times.

An unusually great angle of Vanna. What was this thread about, anyway?
