Robot Drifter Possible?

In another thread, I challenged the ELEV-8 to beat a professionally-flown RC plane. Now take a look at pro driver Ken Block driving a drift car (AKA fishtailing) and let your mind wander. What would it take for an autonomous car to tackle some of these gymkhana maneuvers? Obviously this 4WD car chassis handles differently than typical diff-drive robots. Makes a pretty good case for Ackerman steering, eh? BTW, it's better in fullscreen at http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=4TshFWSsrn8&vq=medium And that's a very trusting soul on the Segway at 2:40!

Well on safety and cost grounds I'd suggest starting with something like these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzTZKKrI1kQ

Seems like a cheap hobby to get into. Just buy ties and rims every day. :)

I ran gymkhanas for a few years back in the 80's with my 68 Triumph Spitfires. Now that I moved back and joined my old club, (Fairfield County Sports Car Club), I'm going to try again with my 94 Suburban 2500 454 CID. Hope they don't charge for cones. :)

And a full tank of gas every 15 minutes with that 454! :)

Are you kiddn'. I would have to add a pit stop for fuel on a three lap circuit. :)

That track in the video is screamin' Corvair. :)

As you know, early 'vairs were great at drifting even when you didn't want 'em to. It's just no fun when your tail end beats you around the curve.

Why didn't Nader have anything to say about my beloved 1968 Porsche 911 rear engine machine, (which was totaled when a guy rear ended me).

Back on topic, I'm going to take a couple of 10,000 RPM motors out of the 30 or so SCSI drives I have, and figure out a plan to replace the feet on my penguins with Mecanum wheels. Must lower CG of course.

If you want to do this on the cheap (relatively speaking) take a look at sprint carts. I suppose you could even make one into a robo cart.
