Need Some Quick Help with Connection

I just received a BASIC Stamp Homework Board and I can't seem to connect it to my laptop...the USB drive just won't recognize it at all...I have a cord that connects the serial part of the board to the usb of my computer. I could really use some help from anyone. Thanks

What operating system on the PC?
Is the Stamp on the board?
Is the board turned on?

Some of those USB -> Serial cords don't work properly. You might consider this adapter from Parallax. I use it with my H/W Boards and Scribbler 'bot.

Do you have the latest software installed and the board powered? do you get any indication there was a connection when you connect. Which USB to serial adapter are you using?
