I doubt there is anything to be worried about, nothing is mentioned in the datasheet (AS5055 rather than RS). Most probably it is to ensure that automated soldering is not messed up due to corrosion on the pins, perhaps they store them in a shed, Austria is a little damp :). They are just like any other chip totally sealed in plastic.

Pots on the other had would be terrible in wet conditions!

I will have to experiment on the pulse losses when there is a start, stop or reverse but hopefully they shouldn't be too numerous or random. I will send it back and forth loads of times and check on its return accuracy.

There should not be any losses at all.

p.s. If you are using a multiturn pot I would say the variation you are seeing seems far too large, I suspect something is wrong. Can you post a schematic?

The package arrived sealed with a desiccation package and moisture indicator. This is unusual for electronics I've ordered so I'm concerned what that means.

I think it's just chance you haven't received sealed electronic before. It's pretty common. It can be a bit of a problem becaause I don't open the sealed packages until I'm actually ready to use the chip. When I went to open some smt LEDs a year after I purchased them, I found they weren't LEDs after all; it was a package of fuses. Digi-Key still replaced them with LEDs even though it had been a year (they let me keep the fuses too).

Do you have numbers for the parts you ordered? I'd like to experiment with these too and I might as well get the same ones you did so we can compare notes.

Thanks much for the info! I am working on an outdoor robot and Oregon is rainy too.

Graham was correct, it''s P/N: AS5055-EQFTCT-ND from Digi-Key. I also ordered R063-063-DM from Amazing Magnets. Not sure what I'll do with that many magnets or if at 1/16" they're big enough for the job. If not I'll get the next larger size.

This is a picture of how I tried to use the mouse sensor for odometry:

    Mouse Odometry.jpg

It worked OK if the surface was completely flat. However because I had four points of contact when it hit an uneven patch it would often lift one of the wheels and that would mess things up. If a bot used this sensor as a tail skid it might work because there would only be three points and the mouse sensor would always be in ground contact.
