dc motor speed conrtol 555 and basic 2?

I want pwm of dc motor for speed control. can that be done with 555 timer and basic stamp? Sounds like the propeller can do true pwm with its counters. I would like to understand what drives true pwm and how it works. Basic stamp has a command for this but its not useful for driving motors, not sure why. -mike

Yes, the Stamp's pwm output is only for brief output. A better bet might be to use an RC speed control, which would use servo-style commands from the Stamp. Here's a $5 airplane throttle (no reverse): http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9090

Thanks Erco....what is different between the stamp and propeller to make this work? An article by Chris savage makes it sound like its the propellers counters. If it had no counters would it still control the speed? I would like to know the nitty gritty and build rather than buy where its possible. - mike
