I'm stunned it hasn't leaked its contents all over the place by now.

I live in the middle of a big empty. Amongst the trees are scattered all manner of diggings from 50-150 years ago. Some sites were just test holes, some were full-blown mines that operated until the ore ran out. Amongst the ruins, often under the floorboards of old shanties, I've found all sorts of artifacts, including some really crazy old batteries.

The resourcefulness of the early miners is incredible to behold. Many a '28 Packard was converted into a lift by parking it over a shaft, clamping one wheel to the frame, and winding steel cable around the other wheel (that had been liberated of its tire). The motor, transmission, differential, and brakes provide all the power and control necessary to get miners into the mine and ore out. OSHA would have soiled their diapers over the set-up.

I grew up near a place like that, nothing as cool as a car converted to a lift though!
