Question about Linescan Imaging Sensor

Just found out that Parallax stocks a line scan sensor board (TAOS TSL1401R). Im trying to see if I can use it to make a laser rangefinder. The difference between the TAOS sensor and the one I have now (Sony LX535) is that the TAOS is 128 pixels, and the one Ive got is 15900 pixels. I wonder if 15k pixels is overkill for a laser rangefinder and if I can use the 128 pixel sensor instead? Anyone know?

If Im able to use the TAOS sensor it would be very helpful as the other one is quite rare other than the one Ive got (it was salvaged from a Scanner).
