yz coordinates?

Hi,

I am looking into creating an archery target that reports the coordinates of an arrows location in the target. We can use blunt tips on the arrows to prevent them from penetrating if needed. I have seen several interactive boards that utilize IR sensors to report coordinates, possibly an option? The arrows are moving anywhere from 140-330 FPS before hitting the target. I currently have the BS2 Board I am using for the beginners course of "whats a Microcontroller".

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Chuck

An array of IR leds and sensors on each axis is a possibility. I have seen that used as a touch screen on a crt display. For an archery target that would require a fairly large number of emitters/sensors. Another possibility would be microphones on the edges/corners to detect the sound of the impact and calculating the coordinates based on the sound travel time.

Will this be an ordinary target mounted on a bale of hay?

One thing that comes to mind is a pair of laser scanners, across the target surface, looking for reflections from the shaft.
