Bad resistors?

I recently purchased the propeller 40 pin dip pe platform, i have assembled it and am doing the labs. in one i thought i had a bad i/o pin or something because an LED wasn't going high when it should. but i took the resistor out and replaced it with another and the circuit worked. i tested the resistor with an ohm meter and it didn't even register. is it possible that it was just defective? does that happen often? i KNOW that i didn't put it in any other circuit before, it wasn't even bent yet.

I wonder if if might be a high value resistor? eg if you put the ohmmeter on the 1000ohm range and tried to measure a 1meg resistor it will not register. What color stripes does it have? Could you post a photo of the resistor by any chance?

Yes they can fail (cracked body, manufacturing defect) - its unusual though. Could be a wrong value (sounds more likely to me - colour codes read from wrong end perhaps)

I had a faulty resistor on one occasion on a batch of PCBs that I'd had assembled; the board didn't work when I tested it and I found that one resistor was open-circuit. It was many years ago, though.

It was only a 100 ohm resistor. Im at work so I can't confirm the color code but a 100 ohm is brown black brown correct?

    This is hilarious!!!

To everyone else, after this ordeal, i tested the same circuit with other 100 ohm resistors and they all worked. just wanted to find any other bad resistors.
