I was checking out the new sales page for the ELEV-8 Quadcopter when I came across the following text...
WARNING: Due to the size of this platform, it can cause serious damage or injury. There is no protection around any of the propellers. We recommend using the RCAPA guidelines for safe use of this aircraft (http://www.rcapa.net/guidelines.aspx).

Heck yeah! If you've got warning like this, this MUST be an awesome project. :)

    Second the idea that that this project is very dangerous. We have a documented accident from one of our staff.

    There is some discussion on DIYDrones and elsewhere about using ducted fans, and how efficiency is actually increased (I have no knowledge of this one way or the other, just repeating what they say). Has anyone with an ELEV-8 ever tried it? Or even adding a plastic shrouding? Delrin or carbon fiber ought to be viable choices.

    Having a ducting add-on kit of some type, or maybe just some instructions, might help with schools and others that are concerned about liability. Some of the middle schools nearby aren't offering wood shop any more, they're so scared of being sued. Crying shame.

    Liability and the need for time to prepare for standardized test. This really annoys me because I use my wood and metal shop skills frequently to fix things. Oh and for robotics, but that is icing on the cake.

    I second that, I live a few short miles from Vandenberg air force base, The big rockets will rattle the windows,
    We watch from the front porch until we see the ion trail turn into a giant ring as the rocket disapears... cool stuff.

    As far as the ELEV-8 goes, Red Ryder BB guns have nothing on the ELEV-8.."Yer gonna put yer eye out kid."

    The prototype multi-blade military drones I've seen always had a shroud of some sort around the blades. I suspect for two reasons. 1) Protection of the blades against being banged up during transport to the field and 2) Protection of the troops handling it. Putting those on a beast like this shouldn't be too difficult.
