hardware communication failure error help please

Hi, this is my 3rd year using the Boe-Bot, serial with USB adapter
and I've never had the problem below without finding a reason
This is the first time my students are repeatedly getting the error message:
"Hardware communication failure, check prog cable and power supply" - 3 or 4 times, then it eventually works.
After running the program several times, it eventually connects without getting the error message.
What would cause it? It eventually works, but it is very annoying, especiallly since it worked in previous years.

Are these perhaps newer PCs ?
I am having a similar problem with a
new PC and can only ascribe it to
(perhaps ?) some new motherboard
method.
