FTDI DB9-USB-D5-F connection to Basic Stamp

Hi All,

New here but have been using stamps for several years. I came across this FTDI part: DB9-USB-D5-F which is a self contained USB to Serial converted housed in a standard DB-9 connector that mounts right on a PCB.

I just tried this on a known working project of mine. I loaded the USB virtual port driver from the FTDI website and when I plug this into the laptop I get nothing.

Has anyone used this part on a basic stamp project? Any insight on circuit changes that may be required?

Thanks much,
Don

    Welcome to the forums Don.

Are you trying to program the Basic Stamp with the USB to Serial? I have been programming the Basic Stamps 1 and 2 with USB to Serial for years without any problems.

Yes - but I cannot even see the Stamp when I run "Identify" and Windows does not identify a new USB device when I connect the module via a USB cable. If I use the Parallax # 28030 USB to Serial mini PCB it works fine.

What I have is a custom circuit board with the BS2-PX stamp on it. The board design was originally laid out with the same RS-232 connections as depicted in the schematic for the board of education. Basically just 3 caps connected out to a DB9. This works fine using a Serial cable. I wanted to change the design to USB as many laptops are now coming with no serial port and my guys in the Field would be better served with a USB. So I stumbled upon these FTDI Modules.

I am using the Female 5Volt version, part number DB9-USB-D5-F soldered right to the PCB in place of the old Serial DB-9. But It does not see nor communicate with the laptop or Stamp.

    Thanks
    Don

    Hello Don,

These look like a neat product...and one I could use on the BS2 OEM board.

Should you find a resolve, please post it?

Sounds like your drivers are not installing correctly. If the drivers were correct plugging ith usb cable into your adapter should find a device even if the adapter was not connected to anything. Try removing all usb drivers and downloading a fresh set.
