Long Dist. WiFi Cheap?

I've read to get long distance WiFi you have to use 900Mhz units that cost about $1K each. Is there a cheaper 3-5 mile system?

I want to share a rural internet connection plus have a household wifi so I can get smart phone service around the house with no phone charges. That would take a 900Mhz transmitter, receiver, plus a regular WAP or router.

Thanks.

Do you have control over both ends of the wireless connection?

That's what I'm looking for. My brother has a long distance wireless ISP so he doesn't control both ends. But I hope to hook up to his end and thus control both ends of my sub-system.

You might be able to do it with standard 2.4 GHz 802.11g equipment and a pair of high-gain yagi antennas, assuming you have an unobstructed, line-of-sight path between units.

Thanks, I'll look for a line of sight path. There may be an L path where its line of sight to a barn then from there to a shed where I'll be living.

5 miles isn't that far, you can get that with a nice setup (used) for $1000. 900mHz is too slow, but it may go 'around' your corner situation.

Look for used 802.11n Proxim Tsunami gear on eBay. I've had good luck with them.

Not to be a nag here but make sure your bro's ISP doesn't find out he's sharing his connection with another residence that is always against TOS and if it's the only ISP in the area... that would be bad.

I looked at a product from ubiquiti networks that calmed to do what you want. I never did purchase anything. Amazon pricing looks good.
