This afternoon a number of earthquakes struck around 10km outside Christchurch measuring 5.3, 5.8, 6.0 and?

I do hope everyone, including Hanno and his family are safe. We are thinking of you here in Oz.

Thanks for thinking of me and my neighbors again...
It's been a "moving" year, but we're still doing fine. A week ago my parents arrived for a visit and I proudly told them that we hadn't felt any quakes for 3 months. The first 5.8 was quite unsettling but I was still able to convince my wife and kids to head to the beach for some model airplane flying and swimming. Just as we got to the parking lot the 6.0 struck, cars were bouncing all around us in the parking lot. Huge clouds of red dust in the air from falling rock, see attached. We've had several dozen aftershocks today but most people seem to be ok. We were hoping to head into the newly re-opened inner city tomorrow to take photos with Santa, hopefully it'll still be open.

    Pleased you are safe Hanno.

A friend of mine in Auckland sent us some photos of roads down your way lined with containers to block rock falls from the mountainside. Hopefully this would have helped protect the cars and passengers if there were any more rock slides. Missed the start of the news here tonight and I gather it was the first item.

Take Care and please have a safe and Great Christmas & New Year.

@Hanno: Wow, so much for you being able to enjoy your sunny 70 degree Christmas in Christchurch. Glad to hear you're OK and we're hoping that this round is over or over soon. God bless you Kiwis, you have had quite a year. May the Mayans be wrong and here's to a more stable 2012!

    Hanno,

Glad to hear you and the family are OK. Just read the latest new and it said damage was not too bad. Hope downtown will be open for Santa pictures.

I hope this will not be occurring yearly.

You do have accelerometers on the TBOTS to measure this, right? :)

    Merry Christmas!

Just got back from a perfectly normal day in the city, got our photo with Santa without standing in line! Beautiful summer day here, park looks gorgeous. Supposedly peak ground acceleration was 1g, not as much as the February quake, that was 2.2g at my house, but still impressive. Imagine tilting your house and everything in it by 90 degrees!
    Merry Christmas everyone!

Down here in Dunedin NZ I never felt any of the previous quakes but yesterdays was really rolling. A horrible 'squishy' motion as a friend put it.
