question about controlling voltage output with microcontroller

I hacked an electric scooter and motor controller. It's super heavy duty and I want to use it. It had an inductive joystick, on the controller board the pins boiled down to two wires - blue and yellow. Each one has a voltage range from +6.8v full forward, 5.8v idle, 4.8v full back. If the supply to either is disconnected a safety circuit I'm assuming is for joystick failures kicks in.

My question is what should I put between the microcontroller's pin and the joystick port that will allow me to select the voltages? I'm using three variable voltage regulators, and I have a Basic Stamp board to start with. I purchased some relays and diodes and found that the dry contacts trip the built-in joystick safety. Whatever I do has to be linear between the max and min voltage, and would be great if it could be controlled via PWM.

Any ideas?
