I'm not sure if Parallax sells something like this, you could use the Propplug, but Sparkfun does sell a nice module.

FTDI has development modules that are often breaboard friendly, however the ICs themselves are only available in SMD packages.

The FT232 chip is not available in DIP package. You could use a PropPlug from Parallax. There is a recent thread (maybe a couple of months old) discussing other cheaper alternate propplug solutions. I also have a cheaper tiny board that could be used on a prototype pcb (see website link in signature).

I have the Sparkfun module mentioned. It's great since if your circuit uses 500mA or less you can power it through the usb either with the 3.3V or 5V power output. Just remember to add a NPN transistor inverter on the DTR output.

    hanks.

As much as I hate to plug them, there is a schmart board that can handle the chip's 0.65mm pitch, model 202-0006-01. (please if you go this route, be rather reganesque; trust but verify since I had to change glasses to read this number) These boards are ok for mounting smd in a pinch, just not very breadboard friendly and wasteful on space. They now have come up with a product to adapt individual smd to dip. Not exactly cheap, but unless you make your own in some quantity.......
