Hey All,

This past summer I started getting into doing SM and circuit board design after seeing Rayman's presentation at the UPEC. At the time I had used Parallaxes single axis gyros in triplets for some of my robot projects, but the lack of a 3 axis gyro started me thinking. I saw the 3 axis L3G4200D gyro on Mouser and asked Rayman if he could help write demo code for it which he did. I designed the sensor so that it could be easily dropped into the extra EEPROM slot on a number of popular Propeller boards such as Gadget Gangster's Propeller Platform or their Quick Adapter Module for the Propeller Quickstart Board. The stackable headers also allow Rayman's 3 axis accelerometer to be easily stacked on top of it, giving your board 6DOF in a tiny 0.5x0.5inch footprint. Since I started working on this sensor Parallax came out with their own breakout board using the same chip, however I think that the physical differences between the layout of each serves different niches .

Let me know what you think and moderators feel free to remove this post if you think the two boards are too similar.

From my website:
This 3 axis gyro comes in a tiny 0.5x0.5 inch package with the SCL and SDA pins brought out for easy I2C communication as well as the interrupt pins. This breakout board has been especially designed for those who want to take advantage of I2C communication protocol by stacking other sensors such as RayMan's 3 axis accelerometer on top of it. This breakout board has also been designed so that it can drop into the extra EEPROM slot on a number of popular Propeller boards such as Gadget Gangster's Propeller Platform or their Quick Adapter Module for the Propeller Quickstart Board.

    Hi Vanmunch

    Really nice work on this.

On my ninja throwing star I fitted DIP8 pads expecting to be able to attach Rayman's 3AD to the underside (and coin cell on top).

Being able to add this gyro too is an added bonus. I guess it should be able to measure up to about 6 spins a second ?

    Hey Tular,

Cool project, I'm glad you like the gyro. I don't think it would trouble detecting 6 revolutions per second, but you would have to modify the demo code a bit for it to do what you want. If you do try it (I just set-up the "international shipping button[$11]") and it doesn't do what you want just send it back and I'll refund you the $22. I'd be really curious to see if it will work for you.

    Have fun!

    Hey Tubular,

No problem. I first recived the email from PayPal and wondered if that was you. : ) I'll be able to send it out to you first thing tomorrow morning. Rayman has also worked on the demo code some more and added a lot more functionality. Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions. It sounds like people really like the small size and the stackable headers.

    Hey Tubular,

I sent your gyro out in the mail this morning. Cruso sent me a package a little bit ago and it took ~12 days to reach me from Australia . Let me know how it goes/looks and I'll get Rayman's new demo program uploaded soon. :)

Wonderful. Can't wait to see how it goes.

Anyone thinking of doing a DIP8 module with a compass so we can complete the set? Its a pity the parallax one has the 4 key pins slightly out of order otherwise we could stack that too

Ya, actually that's the next thing that I'm doing. I just got the beta boards today.

    Vanmunch,

Got a chance to test this with my Ninja board this weekend. It works beautifully, congratulations. I'm quite impressed with how stable the angle calculation is.

Any news on the Mag module?

    cheers

    Hey tubular,

I'm glad that it worked well for you. I'll have to pass along your stability compliment to Rayman, he's the one who did the code. :) I'm curious if you have any pictures or video of it with your Ninja board? Did you use it with Rayman's accl stacked with it?

I've been a bit distracted with a couple of other projects recently, but I'll pull out the compass module and work on it some more. I think it's basically done, just need to test it...

    Talk to you later.

Here's a photo. There's a big offset between the boards due to three headers in between (i had a machined DIP8 socket on the ninja board, then had to adapt this to a socket that would accept the gyro

I must confess I've temporarily misplaced the 3AD, so I haven't tried that yet. It'll turn up soon enough

I've got some neat ideas for making a video using my GoPro and the gyro equiped ninja board spinning through space, It'll be a few weeks before I get to it...

Looking good! I forget how small your ninja star is. I'll be excited to see the video!
