Jobs on Creativity

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people.

“Unfortunately, that’s too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.” [Steve Jobs interview; Wired, February 1996]

How true. If I were to post my resume, someone would think, "You were all over the planet with different jobs".

I think my experience fits in with Steve's outlook on personnel.

I just have a hard time 'splaing that to people. Made me a better person.

In my biz, we say "creativity is like a muscle". The more you use it, the easier it gets. It saddens me when I meet people who say "I'm not creative, I could never do that".

    One helluva self-fulfilling prophecy.

    He's 100% correct.

23 years with the same company, same building, 3 different cubicles.

You learn to find outside activities to stretch your muscle or you become part of the office furniture.

Seriously? What business manager really wants to deal with a room full of creative people and all their insolent quirks? Even Thomas Edison gave Nikola Tesla the boot. Hierarchies are notorious for killing the buzz. While many business people like the idea of fostering creativity, the ones that actually promote it are few and far between. And those managers that actually enjoy that kind of unpredictable environment are rarer still.

Creativity is a great buzz word, but look at all the damage creative financing has done to the US housing market. Wasn't in Edison that said, "Invention is 1% inspiration and 99% prespiration."

I think that Steve Jobs merely demanded that those that worked with him provided the 99% they were paid to provide.
