Wow. How many other hobbies require someone standing by with a fire extinguisher? Plus, you've got to be a freaky-good RC pilot to fly something that large and fast. A crash would entail damage to more than just the model plane.

    Skunkworks rocks!!

    "Dear Santa,

I haven't written to you in a few years. I've really been a good boy this year and only have on present one my list. If you get it for me, I promise not to violate the airspace of any sovereign nations."

That is amazing and puts the 0.049 models I used to fly to shame.

He broke the AMA safety code, sections B1 and B3d:

-All pilots shall avoid flying directly over unprotected people, vessels, vehicles or structures and shall avoid endangerment of life and property of others.
-At all flying sites a safety line(s) must be established in front of which all flying takes place ...: (d) Intentional flying behind the safety line is prohibited.

But that's ok, because I don't think he is in the USA...

Very cool plane, it sounds like they're in Germany.

I'm equally impressed by the pure aerobatic skill of the tiny indoor RC fliers. Check this guy's reverse prop thrust hover at 2:05: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl0EXJ0RUkA
and then see this Helsinki Flying Circus indoor flying light show. LEDs, lasers, fire, they've got it all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xEw2Rv4zZM

Clive, Are you sure it uses jet engines?

It just didn't seem very fast. I wonder if it uses ducted fans. I didn't see all the paraphernalia one usually sees with jet engines.

That is just about the coolest "toy" I have ever seen!

From the email I was sent....

This is one absolutely amazing remote controlled [RC] model airplane. Not only did they build its jet engines, but included a retractable landing gear, and built it into a
fully scaled model of the SR-71 "Blackbird" that flies just like the real McCoy. This SR-71 model was built by an Engineer / RC enthusiast in Germany, and is certainly one awesome toy.

Click here to watch and listen to it soar. And the landing is amazing, too.

Listening to the time it took for the engine to spin up to speed, I would certainly think that it is a gas turbine engine. But it may be a fanjet (bypass jet), that is the gas generator has an additional turbine stage or stages which power the fan. That would be more optimal for low-speed flight than a pure turbojet, with the expense of a little more complexity.

Fantastic video. Not easy to fly - I see he went into the clouds at one point.

I picked up one of these simulator controllers http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270815000311?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 for a very reasonable price. FMS is the simulator software and there are sites with free downloads of almost every plane you can think of. I tried a F18 but I crashed it many times! Easier to fly in "chase" mode but a lot harder when you are on the ground like a real RC enthusiast would be.

I'm learning to fly RC helicopters. I can fly real 3ch ones but not 4ch, and a simulator is much cheaper! I appreciate even more how hard the plane in that video is to fly, especially the landing.

The would be a great model for Taiwan to get into. China would constantly be scrabbling their fighters to chase model airplanes - a bit of pay back for all the missiles that they have pointed our way.

Of course, it may be a very high risk venture.

That's the coolest model aircraft I've ever seen. Nice video - and I LOVE that sound! I want to install a pair of those jets on my mountain bike! :-)

This jet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTHWBSluUjU is so fast it would literally be out of sight if it was going in a straight line for more than 10 seconds I guess.
    Definitely not a beginers modle.
There should be an emergency backup system like a panic button on the radio controller that would automaticaly make it go into a vertical climb, turn the engine off, then after it stalled deploy a parachute. (so the chute wouldn't disintegrate)
