It's like a Boe-bot with the crawler kit combined with a quadcopter. Check the video.

    Okay, got my attention.

Would it be more interesting if it were an ELEV-8 that deposited an S2 which did a task, returned to the mother ship and was then carried away?

Have you seen the way the Mars Curiosity rover will be deployed? It's similar to what you describe (rockets instead of propellers), and scary complicated. Having an ELEV-8 do that would certainly be impressive.

Very cool. I think walking is what makes it cool. A Biped would be better, it already has the gyro & accelerometer.

If you use an S2 or other wheeled bot instead of legs, at least make it balance Segway style...

Which reminds me of another well-intended back burner project of mine, making an old Blue Scribbler into a balancing Highboy... added to my Christmas break project list!

That was cool. Flying is energy intensive compared to walking so it can move short distances or fly longer ones.

I watched the curiosity rover video several times.

    Got my attention too!

Only problem with it being used as a mars rover is the solar panels... they would restrict flight ability. Perhaps a rollout solar panel while walking and roll away for flying larger distances.

Perhaps it could be done for a little less than $1B ???
