Just $100 (as of this posting) buys you $800 worth of (slightly damaged) GE robot arm. Pickup only, bring a friend & a truck. Or set it gently under a good friend's Christmas tree!
What a project for 2012...

Encoders are expensive. :frown:

BAH! A REAL man can fix that with a BS1 and some duct tape. Cowboy up!
I want it, but I did the math:
Round trip to pick up 2800 miles
Suburban 454 CID 12MPG = 233 GAL
Average Gas $3.49 x 233 GAL = $814.00
Two nights at Motel 6 = ~$100.00
Total ~$1000.00 travel, ( not including the initial purchase, which may go up)
Nope, that money is better spent for Christmas gift for others
I'm afraid my kids would not see the logic in that.
"What do you mean Dad, we now own 1/3 stock in a GE Robot arm, what the heck is that? Will it fit under the tree and will it play with my Play Station?"

If that's too rich for you, head to Target, where you can get this cute little robotic pickup claw for just $3. It's short, but actually shaped quite well for picking up things (considering it's a non-parallel gripper). Big grippy rubber pads help.
Of course, it might have been a little too heavy for my car...
