Thanks for all of the suggestions I think I'll call this one solved.
Hey all,
I have been searching high and low for a source for inexpensive, single row, stackable headers like those used in "shields" or just like these:
http://www.precidip.com/catalog/product.asp?c=7&p=158&i=499&q=801-PP-NNN-53-001101
(but I can't find where to buy them)
In particular I'm looking for single row with 4 contacts, but longer breakaway ones would be great too.
Any help would be appreciated!
Dave

Samtec has a "buy now" feature and they are also sold by DigiKey.
The bad news is you have to buy 1000, the good news is it'll cost you $48

I have been using them on Gadget Gangster boards and they work very well, especially if you have some taller components like capacitors. The only catch I found was that putting two 8 hole headers side to side - the header was too wide by about 1/4 of a milimetre. However, 30 seconds with a file and the problem was solved.
Biggest problem from 4uconn is shipping cost from them as it is appears to always be ~30% of the component cost.
Note in my versions, the female section has an additional spacer. This can be removed - I will not say that is is really easy, but it is not that difficult either. You can cut them down quite simply.
