Using Scribbler 2 for learning programming, any curriculum out there?

I teach technology in a small boarding school, 18 students. We would like to teach the kids something about programming, and a friend suggested using robotics to do that. I've ordered a Scribbler 2 and I know the kids would have a ball learning to use and program it.

Have any teachers developed lesson plans based on what the Scribbler 2 can do? I'm prepared to write my own, but I'd like to see if anyone else has used this robot in a classroom setting for teaching beginning programming.

Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at the page:

    http://www.parallax.com/go/s2

Lots of information there. The Videos at the bottom would be good to sort through.

I see there is no written curriculum that I can find at this time. I'm sure you could email Parallax directly to see what they have in the works.

The S2 is supposed to be backwards compatible in the GUI environment. The link to the original Scribbler is here:

Thanks Jim. Yeah, I've looked at most of the links on that page and have some pretty good ideas of how to approach this, I think. I'll follow your suggestion and email Parallax and see if they have any examples of curriculum using the Scribbler 2.

Whit+ also produced a nice tutorial. Let me see if I can find it.

Dang! I remember that, and I can find it either. Search words are like the Da Vinci Code sometimes.

What Ken was talking about was this. It uses the GUI for the S2 and the Propeller Tool to teach a bit of Spin.

This was written for the original Scribbler, but easily translates to the S2 GUI Program Maker. I was intending to update this for use with the S2 - just never got around to doing it.

    Good Man Whit,

I'm going to tuck them away so I don't have to pull my hair out trying to find them again.

Thanks for both those files, Whit. I saw the first one (Lesson1) yesterday and discovered how to use the GUI to look at the generated code, that was great. I just printed out the second one and will run it when my S2 arrives in a couple of days. Great stuff here.

Great question. We will be posting something that might be perfect for you tomorrow!
    Here is a written preview:

"Parallax's customers have been gifted a feature-rich educational program
for the S2 Robot. The "Robots for Beginners Workshop" was created by
robotics engineering consultant and educator Neil Rosenberg, a retired
teacher with a heart to promote STEM
    education. The materials include a
    59-page student workbook as a
    fully-formatted PDF, an instructors guide,
    a bonus project, competition
guidelines, certificates of completion, and all
    the example code. The
program has been tested at two workshops held by
    Mr. Rosenberg, one with
8-14 year old students, and one with senior citizens,
    and was thoroughly
enjoyed by both groups (especially Project 10, I hear!)"

I shall repost with links when the program is available for download.
    Cheers, Jen J.

Like Whit, thanks Jen. This is going to keep me busy this weekend, and the UPS man just brought my robot!

    What a day!

Thanks Whit. That's cool! I just opened the box and tried out my serial programming cable and it works like a champ.

I think my students are really going to enjoy playing and learning with this thing.
