Various groups have claimed to building and selling low-cost computers but when it comes to actually buying the hardware - nothing is available.

@rod1963 - "nothing is available" you make it sound like they don't exist, I don't think this is the case here.

This India tablet appears to be already in production and is being distributed to test groups in India, and is targeted at schools. My reason for asking is to find if anybody knows anything about when these may be more widely available, or how to get them.

Perhaps you are referring to the raspberrypi, but it is not being sold yet, its not projected to be available until November.

In fact I do already have the OLPC XO-1, which went on sale several years ago for the insanely low price (at the time) of $200. This device is available, is widely distributed, enjoys continued support, and still rocks. I beleive the XO was the main driver for the whole "netbook" thing we see now.

I imagine Aakash Android Tablet is the reason HP is out of the tablet market now.

    Thanks Leon.

I wonder if one of these would be nice with MK Borri's prop-android bridge....?

I don't think I'll get rid of my Dell Streak Android tablet and get one of those Indian ones.

I'm not saying they don't exist but they aren't available to the public at this time and yeah the Raspberry PI is in the same category.

Still I don't see the fascination with them beyond those with a tight budget for consumer electronic devices.

My thought is to use the prop to talk to the sensors and actuators, and to send data to an android device. The android device would do some processing and display, but primary be responsible for sending data to and from the workstation. A $35 device might be suitable for this application. For example, robots sends position and range data, and the server create an environmental model map.

I do plan to get an fancy android phone such that it could serve as a wireless programming terminal (a crappy iPhone already has been shown to work with propforth but the display resolution is too low). But I couldn't justify committing an extra $200 phone in a project.

Many years ago we used the Palm Pilots in a similar way. They were great for a cheap GUI with a RS232 interface. Once the price of tablets drops to $35 or even below the $100 mark they'll be great for cheap GUI.

In the meantime, for a non-tablet gui you can use the Raspberry-Pi when it comes available later next month (Nov), its priced at $25

I've been watching the RaspberryPi, I get the idea that it will be closer to $35, but still good for me, and now I see Peter is starting on Cortex work http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?135224-Proposed-ARM-Cortex-M4-companion-module&daysprune=60

Right now the first option I'm looking at is http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?130380-Android-Debug-Bridge-on-a-prop&highlight=android+bridge, but I haven't gotten hold of an android device to hack.

Between the two of these there shouldbe something interesting soon.
