    For some reason, the shape of the bracket made me think of Gossamer:

    I feel the need to ask a frugal Yankee question. What advantage do IR and sonar have together that they are missing apart?

    Sensor redundancy. So, you can use the data from both to ensure that the reading is correct.

    IR can be fooled under some lighting conditions. SONAR can be fooled by some materials and angles
    This gives your robot a belt and suspenders!

    OK, that makes sense. I imagine that is more important with large robots than the small ones I work with.

    In the post I cited above, IR and sonar are used together with external transponders for position triangulation.

    This thing looks even more like an owl than the acrylic PING sensor stand. Or maybe, I dunno, I have a sudden urge to take it to my leader...
