But the big news of the day was the 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet. This Fire is Amazon's stab at the crowded tablet PC market, which is already dominated by Apple's iPad.

But at $199 the Kindle Fire is sure to find a bigger audience than other Apple iPad challengers, namely Research in Motion's BlackBerry Playbook and Google Android tablets from companies such as Samsung. Most other tablets are more than twice the price of the Kindle Fire, retailing for around $500. More importantly, the Kindle Fire is priced even lower than B&N's Nook Color, which retails for $249.

    Hello!
Yes I caught that. However given the circularity regarding CNET, I'd wait a bit longer. I did see a reference to it from MSNBC newsfeeds so we've got agreement. But only just.

However I've already got my tablet selected.... It's a streak that's roosting at the Staples stores.

I've tried ignoring all this as I am not sure that I could really use a Kindle in Taiwan even if I owned one. Nonetheless, Fire away! It seems like a smart move by Amazon to get more people to move over to ebooks.

    My tablets are all asprin.

Mine is a monochrome eInk Kindle 3; below, ignore the file name. I was only iinterested in a ebook reader, AND the near month of battery charge, in just reading; downloading books discharges faster with the WiFi on. I hate changing/charging batteries, but the Kindle is a nice comprise.

Now the color tablets probably will never have such a good battery discharge time. Yep, look nice.

With a usable on-screen keyboard and a usable gnu package (gcc/lex/bison and so-on) it could be what we need (and a serial port on some kind...). No the iPad isn't (no usable on-creen keyboard! :( ). At 200 bucks...

I would love to see a general purpose computer with the E-ink screen and therefore awesome battery life, but with a clamshell or docking touch-typable keyboard for doing word processing, data collection, and so on. This is an area where the industry still hasn't caught up with the TRS-80 Model 100, designed in 1981, and for all its awesomely obsolete 24K memory limit and 1 MHz operation still unmatched for certain applications.

I would also like to see something on the order of what Dr. Corbin has described, perhaps with a ARM like the Raspberry PI with all sorts of ports like Serial, Parallel(basic and enhanced), 488, USB, running a ported over version of CP/M rather than Linux, with built in Basic or Forth.

Well... Amazon decided to "downgrade" their 3G services... so I'm cancelling my Kindle Touch 3G order. The current "Kindle Keyboard 3G" allows browsing of the web via the web browser over 3G, but the new Kindle Touch 3G only allows browsing of the web over WiFi. It makes no sense to pay a $50 differential between the 3G and WiFi (which is the same price difference on the old ones) and not get the same level of feature difference. Bummer.

They are now selling the older and mature Kindles at the most rock-bottom price.

However, I'm in SE Asia, and buying books online in Amazon seems to be a very tough thing to do. I hope they extend the services to there. :)
