Speed Controller

Does someone know if you can use a digital potentiometer # AD5220 in place of the 100K potentiometer of a Speed Controller?
http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/motor/k166.pdf or if there's a different way of connecting it.

Thanks, Carl

So, you want to replace the 100K potentiometer (P1 in k166 pdf) that is part of this Speed Controller board? If you want to do this, you will need make sure that the digital potentiometer # AD5220 is above or same the rating of this 100K potentiometer "P1" and you be required to make a different board because the digital potentiometer is a chip and will not fit on the k166 kit board.

    It's possible, but... it depends.

R1, P1, and R2 form a divider - the input to the buffer (x1) amp, IC1:A - ranging from approx. 1/2 of supply voltage to nearly 0V.

There are 3 versions of the AD5220, Parallax sells the 10KΩ version.

Your "Kit166V2" can run from as much as 32V (they claim.) So, the voltage you intend to run will have a lot to do with how appropriate any mod with an AD5220 might be.

Here is one suggestion for you. Which is to look at Parallax site http://www.parallax.com/tabid/599/Default.aspx for motor controllers that you are looking for.

Hobby RC speed controllers are high current, and are controlled with pulsout commands just like servos.

I am new to all of this. I have some 24v 3.5 amp motors from a Hovearound and trying to control them with a BS2
    and a 2-Axis Joystick

Do your motors have brushes? If they have three power lines they're probably brushless. Brushed motors usually have two power wires.

Here's a link to some Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs). You want to make sure you get one that matches your motors needs.
