Is there any way to configure the PMB-648? I have written a few SiRF and NMEA commands to it and it is hard to tell if they did anything? Is there any software or technique that can be used to see the effect of certain commands?

How are you planning to use the module? Do you have a way to receive and display its output?

Because most configuration changes will cause an effect that will be immediately seen in the serial output characters.

    I'll second PJ's suggestion. I have a PMB-688, and SIRFDemo.exe worked excellent for me.

I used a USB to serial converter to connect my PC to a a breadboarded max232 chip, and connected the max232 to the GPS sensor programming and data ports.

Power the GPS unit, start SIRFDemo.exe, find the port that the USB serial converter attaches to, and SIRFDemo.exe will connect and start displaying the GPS output.

You can do all sorts of configuraton using the SIRFDemo interface and see the output of the GPS unit change immediately.
