Hotmail servers have been down for atleast 30 min, I only noticed it at about 10:50pm EST. Anyone else having this problem? Any word on why? I Can't find any media coverage on it yet except from http://www.theinternetpatrol.com/hotmail-outage-as-server-goes-down-users-unable-to-access-email/ and that site is having some outages too.

There's been a massive power failure in Southern California and Arizona presumably from a high voltage transmission line failure and the resulting cascade.

Yeah I was guessing that it might be that too. I thought there were more than one data centers for hotmail servers with backups around the country but they must all be in CA or AZ if that is the case.

Finally back up, I think after 12 or 13 years, it is time to change email providers. I see Juno is still around, If I remember correctly, weren't they the first free email provider? or was that Excite? I should have an account on both if I can remember the password and email I used to sign up.

Any suggestions of providers that are not selling out or experiencing frequent down time? I don't like how gmail keeps logging me in when I log in on another site like youtube. I think it is a bit invasive.

Probably no help for you, but I use One.com for site hosting and email.
(Sure, there's been a few outages over the years, but the live support people have always been 'in the know' about what's happening and available to calm users)
It's not unlimited in volume, though, as it eats into the space for hosting files or DBs, but you control all the accounts yourself and can make or delete them as you feel like.

For completely free sites, though, there's www.mail.nu

Yahoo! never gives problems, GMail is good, but is "new" to be judged.

Wow, people use hotmail? I have not even heard the name for years, let alone get any mail from there.

I still have a Hotmail account, and people sometimes contact me on it, so I check my emails on it every couple of months. It worked for me earlier today.
