I probably would have done it differently (used the Kinect more for gesture detection, mapping, that sort of thing), and added a few more sensors at the bottom base that were operated in real time by the Propeller.
But this is what the Madeusa/Eddie platform was designed for -- an open and easily adaptable robot to let people decide the way they want to do things.

Hello!
Indeed. I was at the Maker Faire over the weekend, and met the crew. And saw the mystery. Handsome unit. But I much prefer R2D2 and C3P0. I also bought a Prop board, but that's for a different thread.
Gordon nice to see you here, I have one of your books here. (Where I live.) I bought it back in May of 2009, together with the one on that dratted A***** thing. All in all, I much prefer the devices from Parallax.
And group I enjoyed the references to the Star Wars films, the quotes were well done. The example from "I, Mudd" where our heroes and that kulak Mudd together take apart Norman was also appropriate.
hey erco -
Roy's right. Those are IR's interspersed with a couple of Ping's.
It's tough to see in that pic, but the IR's on the outside edges of the base have a series of pre-drilled mounting holes that allow the IR to point "straight" ahead, or directly out to the side (wall following), or @ 10,20,30,or 40 degrees off of "side" vision.
Here's a little different view of the assembly of the IR and Stand...(pay no attention to the goof-ball putting it together - it's the assembly info here that's important people :-)
Will we being seeing those IR sensors and stands in the store soon?
Yes!
How are the holes in the bottom of the stand put there?
Since acrylic varies, we can't simply put a stack in a jig and laser cut (or mill, for that matter) - because the step and repeat is of varying steps...so...
Yes, it is an "after laser cut" hand operation on our mill at this point. However it's really quick, which means reasonably inexpensive compared to the much longer machining time of the aluminum version.
Matt,
Watch the excessive tanning! Skin Cancer surgery is not my favorite form of recreation. That said, now that I have a laptop maby i can get some coding done next time I have it!

Do I see some empty PING brackets there along for the ride? Sad, yawning chasms of empty loneliness?
So whatever happened to the PING 10-pack?
It has 3 IR sensors along with the 2 Pings. Those "empty" brackets you see are actually hold IR sensors.
