Maybe these new-found stars can cut out the middle-man.

    Perhaps - but can a lifeform on a world of 75% hydrogen and 25% helium ever built a radio-transmitter? If we can get good spectral data perhaps the signature of organic life is detectable? Alien single-celled organisms would be an anticlimax as first contact I feel ;)

    @OP's title

    nope, you only need a pregnant woman and a shuttle to create an alien:
    step1: send the pregnant woman to mars.
    step2: make the woman give birth while on mars.
    step3: name the child.
    step4: bring it back to earth.
    step5: freak out because the kid is a martian.
    note: the birth certificate should have it's birthplace(mars) written on it.

    In an effort to celebrate diversity and be inclusive (and politically correct), I'm going to consider myself a citizen of the Universe, a Universian, from this point forward. This should cover my acceptance until we start pondering the existence of life within other dimensions.
