My spider sense is tingling. Is a hike in auto insurance rates in the offing?

As late as the early 20th century, this was not a problem. Just today, the man whose Alaska salmon troller I worked on in 1977 stopped by the shop. He's 85 now and related a story from his youth in Denmark. It concerned a scrap iron buyer who used a horse cart to make his rounds. Occasionally he would stop at a tavern before going home and become so inebriated he could hardly stand. But he was able to crawl to his cart and tell his horse to take him home, which the horse did reliably.

    Can technology top that?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "top".

    I haven't the words. That's really disturbing.

It seems to me that technology should be available to detect when people are drunk or very tired or using their cell phones when driving a car.
And insurance companies could give you a big discount if you have that technology.

Yelling the insult, "What!! Are you blind!!!??" on the road might soon yield a new response...

As James May said on a Top Gear show where self-driving cars were discussed: "We have self-driving cars already. They're called taxis."
