    Yeah...

The guy 'in charge' of HP these days is an old MS director, and also worked on SAP for many years, and seems to think that SW is the way to go, and specifically, search software.

No one is really surprised that the tablets failed, though, but dropping the entire PC line is just plain stupid.

At my office we've been 'HP only' all the way since they launched the first Deskpro machines nearly a decade ago.
Back then you could buy a pallet of the machines, build a OS Image and copy it to the PCs. Then when you ordered a new set half a year later, that same image would also work on the new machines. Sometimes you needed to update the video drivers, but that was really it.
It was nice and easy being a BOFH back then...

Sure, you could buy 'better' machines, and even HP sold those, but when you needed to upgrade a whole building-full of PCs belonging to beancounters, HR, PR, assorted leaders, and buerocrats...
(We even gave them to the DTP and CAD users, we just swapped out the standard graphics card and stuffed it with as much RAM as could be fitted in them)
When one failed, we had a couple of spares. Pop the lid and remove the HDD... Guarranteed to work in the spare...
(Unless it was the HDD that was broken of course... )

As for HP focusing more on thir SW side...
Frankly, even their own techies are loath to use their SW...

In a few years, HP will be a 'has been' just like what's happening with Nokia now.
(Incidentally, Nokia has an ex-MS as CEO... And the first he did was kill off all work on alternative OSes for Smartphones, and focusing entirely on SM PocketSh!t )

I will try to pick up a HP tablet, though, if I can get it at that price, not to use it, but to add to my collection.
(It belongs with such flops as the Atmark Pippin, the Nokia N-gage, Nintendo VirtualBoy, Apple eMate 300 )

They sold out locally before I could purchase one. The store employees bought most of them. It would have been a great for my PDF collection.

Oh no, not another old MS director in charge.. one of those guys destroyed SGI, then recently another is busy destroying Nokia. And now HP? Wasn't Carly bad enough?

Another great American success story circles the drain thanks to a series of idiot ceo's. Carly the wrecking ball started it and this goon from Microsoft is going to finish off the company.

HP was a little disappointed after they bought Compaq.

It is also sad for HP to give up on a tablet when they just came out with competition for the iPad. If you did all that work then why abandon the product? At least get your money back.

Seems like the market is too competitive and changes too much to make long term plans. Is this really the death of the personal computer? Are smartphones and the cloud really taking the place of computers?

It seems as if its going that way....good for techies like us though. If we jump on the band wagon early enough and everyone goes to tablets and phones things wont be as "freeware" meanig everything will be in a central market location. Hence the reason I picked up a few books on iphone development.

Dumping the PC side may not be such a bad idea. Based on my own experience it should be dumped in the garbage. Very sad for a company that was once considered by many (myself included) to be the model of quality products.

At one point I agree...they USED to be the poster-child of quality. Not soo much latly...the PC repair shop I work in has two stores...at mine alone I have a nice big pile of HP laptops with bad mobo's and HP won't even sell us replacment boards!

Are those the consumer models or are there a lot of the business models(like the EliteBook series) in that pile?

Theyre all consumer models about a year to a year and a half old most are the dv series. The business models seem to hold up just fine. What gets me is these consumer models in the pile are not abused I know most of the familys and they arent hard on stuff or even smoke so theyre jsut garbage.

HP has always taken quality control and engineering seriously with their hardware. Generally their above average quality and durability won them their reputation. So buy there stuff at big discounts is likely to be a great bargain.

That is common with many manufacturers which make business/industrial as well as consumer "grade" products.

For example electrical outlet manufacturers have "commercial grade" outlets which might cost $3.00 U.S. each, and also sell cheap consumer outlets for 50 cents each. The commercial grade will hold up to more constant use.

Same with door locks. Look at the cheap locks on home doors. Then look at the $200.00 door locks on business, schools, and government buildings. Hundreds of people may open a business door each day. But just a few openings a day for a home. You can only buy the "commercial grade" locksets at a locksmith. Not sold at home improvement stores.

Same with commercial grade vacuums you see them using at businesses or hotels. They don't sell them at retail consumer stores, rather at a janitorial supply.

And business computers are sold by a business equipment dealer. You need to order them. Keyboards on business computers, calculators, etc. are designed to be used 8 hours a day. Much higher quality!

When they have nothing of value left, they can sell the name back to Agilent and then the name Hewlett Packard will mean something again.

I don't understand why HP would do this. HP spent something like 1.5 Billion on Palm after they bought Compaq. They had this big fight with shareholders and now they are turning 180 degrees around.

I am on the list to get one of their tablets if they become available but I don't know what I'll do if I need support. I suppose I can't complain at $99 or $150 because it is cheaper than an iPad. I also don't understand why they would be selling them at a loss or why they are trying to produce more for a loss when they are trying to get out of the market.

At least Amiga users are still around. Not so sure about HP.

Supposedly their upstream suppliers were raising holly hell with them & they decided to use all the components they were already on the book for. But who the heck knows. I too am on that wait list and give myself a 50/50 chance. If that doesn't work out I may go for the Nook Color or maybe even a cheapy Pandigital that I hear does quite a bit for the money. If anyone knows about that, let me know.

So how do you get on the wait list? I see Amazon listing them, but not for $99 or $150.. I would like to get on a waitlist for the new batch too, but at the right price.

I see in today's Taipei Times that HP will continue with at least one more production run of its Tablet due to demand at the new reduced price.

    Loopy,

Now why would they do that unless there was still at least a little profit margin in it at this new low price?
Corporations like this aren't known for charity work.

Could this by any chance drag on for "just one more run" a few more times thus changing the price structure of the entire tablet market?

Their website which is slow as molasses had an email list you could add yourself to. I don't see it anymore.

HP was all ok years ago but they suddenly dumped their major product lines? That is kinda a bit too rushed...

They've announced that they're going to make another production run because their suppliers have large inventories of custom parts for the tablet and they'd all get junked otherwise with HP getting the bill. This way, the inventory will get mostly used up, everybody will make enough money to be satisfied, but not enough to be happy, and that'll be that.

How about the HP-Compaq merger thing? All I heard from them are the major product lines are being jettisoned as well, and I don't know what they are doing nowadays.

And in here, the Dell catalogues are showing more laptops and tablets instead of the conventional desktops, and Acer stopped sending their catalogues months ago.

I wonder if Apple's iPad really kills the competitor's market, or it is just me? Hmm... :)

They couldn't compete with prices as DELL was always cheaper than HP in terms of base systems.

HP had a lot of quality people. The problem is that you have to pay people with Masters or Doctor degrees.
