Curious about Linux-based PC firmware (AKA Coreboot)....

I am truly curious if anyone have tried using the Linux-based boot firmware in some of the computer, evicting some buggy BIOS, either for serious usage or just out of curiosity. If it worked for any of you, I would like to hear some of your experiences. I won't argue or something. Just wanted to know, as I want to use my ancient Gateway Essential Flex 700c (slim "Cow box" with 700MHz Celeron Coppermine CPU, along with Intel 810e northbridge chipset) for completely different purpose. To be able to do that, I have to evict the OEM American Megatrends, Inc. firmware with Coreboot. Being of Linux nature, that would give me adequate options, but I would like to hear your opinions before I go ahead and build the Linux firmware, then overwrite the original BIOS with it.
