I've used that type and others like them before without any problems. Most of the time I just use those little cylindrical crystals as they are low profile (just a little higher than the Prop) plus the thing that I really look for in crystals is a close pin spacing so that I can connect very close to the Prop pins and avoid long traces. The standard HC49 type parts and especially the SMD versions have such large spacings and huge pads that makes it hard to keep this part of the design "tight" when laying out pcbs.
That's one of the reasons that I (in the Propeller Backpack) and Parallax (in the Spin Stamp) have resorted to 10 MHz crystals in our designs instead. They're way more compact than anything available with a 5 MHz resonant frequency.
