Greetings Bot ideas?

So....I have had a couple ultrasonic sensor kits sitting around ( similar to http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/surv/ck203.htm ) and a couple old rat shack voice modules, and a couple extra basic stamp controllers, so....I'm thinking of building a robot to greet people as they walk by. The message would be reprogrammable (so good for different occasions), and just require putting all these different kits together with the stamp.
The obvious limitation to the ultrasonic kits I have built, is that by design they just trigger at range sense (no distance information). So, I could use both of them to detect someone as they walk up/walk by by turning their 1 dimensional capabilities into 2D sensing and acutally put them to some use.
A single sensor with range sense would yield better/more information, but that will be V2.0.
The only other issue I see would be turning the head/body with servos.
Any comments/ideas before I start this project?

I found a few on sale for a few bucks several years ago when the local shack went out of business.
