BS2 Componentry Question

So .... what is the yellow component (circled) on the BS2 board and where can I get one.

I had a little power supply issue (okay, large issue), and blew it off the board. I know the BS2 may be smoked otherwise but I want to try and replace this component before tossing the BS2 into the garbage can.

Thanks

Brian

That's the Tantalum (dry type) capacitor. I am not sure about the rating, but I would say either 6 or 10V, and 47uF (uF - microfarads) and for this one, it will have to be surface mount. You can try Digikey (www.digikey.com) or Mouser (www.mouser.com) and then go to "Passive Component" then "Capacitors" - then select the type I mentioned above.

If you're unconfortable about it popping again, you can go with Aluminum Polymer SMD capacitor with same rating, maybe half the uF rating - Tantalum capacitors fail by going off with a bang (after going short-circuit internally).

Welcome to the forums! That is an tantalum capacitor and per the schematic, is a 15uF, 16 volt. If you would like, PM me your address and I can send you a couple BS2's that have other issues, but can be cannibalized for parts to try and get yours running again. They are just busy collecting dust right now.....

WBA, that's right.... I guess I got the rating wrong - the picture was too small for me to read the rating, though.

Brian D, at least you would have couple BS2 to cannibalize to replace what's smoked.

    Have a happy tinkering day!

    Hi Brian-
    Welcome to the Forums!

We have piles of those caps - PM me with your mailing address :-)
(or you can go with WBA's offer - or both!)

A capacitor is a pretty passive device; it holds a little charge or does some filtering. It took some serious overvoltage/sparks/abuse to completely blow it off the board. That may be the most obvious damage, but dollars to donuts, that's the very least of the total damage that was done.

That said, take up Andrew on his generous offer. Assuming you can solder SMT components, perhaps your Stamp can organ donor a few parts to get one of HIS Stamps going! :)
