Full assembly & schematics for an older robot from Mondotronics. Nothing outrageous, but it does locate & dock with its charger. Good intro to basic theory & construction techniques for new and would-be roboticists. Novel proximity sensor uses 567 timer to generate & detect IR signal, schematics shown.

For specific info on a 567 IR proximity detector, see http://www.simplecircuitdiagram.com/2010/09/21/infrared-ir-proximity-detector/
Or more simply, get some of these IS471F sensors, which work great: http://www.junun.org/MarkIII/Info.jsp?item=46
