Lots of interest in robot arms here. This Brit, a "semi retired engineer with too much time on his hands" has earned my respect by adding optical encoders to an OWI toy robot arm. First, the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wiKAZYmUq0

Uses one PicAxe per joint. Seems like overkill, but this court will not dispute it! This guy did an amazing job of squeezing the encoders inside the stock motor modules.
