Removing mic from Say It module

I realize the Say It module uses a EasyVR board with an added LED, 0.1" header and microphone. While this configuration makes it easy to use with a breadboard and BoE, it makes using it in a finished project more difficult.
I think I can just desolder the mic on the Say It module and attach wires so I can mount the mic in an appropriate location. Even if I can't use the same mic, it would be very helpful with my project to be able to mount the mic a way from the Say It board.
Does any one know of a reason this shouldn't work? Is there any think I should be aware of before removing the mic?
I don't want to buy a EasyVR board that uses an external mic (I already have two Say It modules).

The Say It module just won't work on a mobile robot when the microphone is on the board. Well, not if the robot is in motion at the time.

I think I only need the wire to be about 6 inches. My plan is to use the Say It with an external controller. I'm not sure what type of commands I will use with the Say It yet. There will probably be a lot of redundancy between the Say It and the PlayStation 2 controller. I just think the Say It is cool. Here's a picture of my controller board.
I'm still trying to figure out how the PS2 controller, Say It, Small TV, batteries and Propeller Proto board are all going to fit together.
This is part of a larger project I'm working on.
