I was pleasantly surprised with the 8 pin DIP stereo amplifier from STMicroElectronics.
I pretty much used the example circuit in the datasheet except for the addition of a 100K strereo potentiometer.
Even with these expensive speakers
it doesn't sound bad. They are 3 ohms - from an old boom box.
I am supplying the input audio from my PC's headphone jack.
