I really like my LM317 for the fact that is ADJUSTABLE via a pot but the only problem is that it gets too hot. Does any company make an ADJUSTABLE voltage regulator similar to the LM317 but with such a high efficiency that it needs a small heat sink or no heat sink at all?

    Dimension Engineering makes one (here). They also make a higher power version.

    That is what I am wanting, you said they have a higher power version, but I can't seem to find it on the website. Could you please give a link of that?

    You browse their list of products in the left-hand panel of their website for this.

    @piguy101,

    I have both of the regulators Mike linked to. I like them. I'm sure there are less expensive regulators that do the same thing but the Dimension Engineering regulators don't require additional component or custom circuit board. They're also very efficient.

    They probably use the Nat Semi Simple Switcher devices. It should be quite easy to design something similar from the parts, much cheaper. It would take more board area, of course.
